In 2018, our family visited Sutherland Falls near Revelstoke, and I was able to capture the beauty of the falls. Back then, it was a quiet, almost hidden gem with barely anyone else around. I remember standing on a rock in the river, getting hit with the spray as the water cascaded down the rocks, with only the sounds of nature around us. The experience was awesome, interrupted only by a couple of kayakers navigating the falls.
On our return visit in 2024, the falls were anything but quiet. This time, it seemed that the falls had gained popularity, and we found ourselves among a steady flow of visitors, all drawn to the same natural beauty that captured us years ago. The once peaceful spot was now bustling with tourists, each trying to capture their own perfect shot.
Capturing a photo this time was a different challenge, as I had to work around other visitors. It made me appreciate how special our initial, solitary visit truly was. However, this visit also highlighted the dangers of over-visitation. A surge in popularity at any spot can lead to environmental degradation, with trails through sensitive vegetation becoming eroded and natural habitats disturbed. Increased human presence poses risks such as littering (evident here), and the potential for accidents near the waterfall’s edge. Overvisitation can also diminish the very tranquillity that makes places like Sutherland Falls so special, both for visitors and the ecosystem. To protect places like this, we need to promote responsible visitation— packing out all waste, and supporting conservation efforts.
My new image of Sutherland Falls, contrasted with that from 2018, tells a story of change—not just in the atmosphere and my approach to photography, but in the pressures many natural sites face. The falls are still as powerful and beautiful as ever, yet the future of places like this depends on us learning to love them without leaving a mark.
