Bow Lake draws outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. It’s a beautiful lake at the foot of Crowfoot Moutain and is home to some of the best winter exploration in Banff National Park. Having stopped there many times over the years, we visited this location a few times during our 2024 winter photography trip.
This year, the snow wasn’t all that special, so after enjoying a sunrise there without a heartfelt attempt at photography, I packed up a little earlier than I normally would and went for a bit of a walk along the lakeshore to scout for something I hadn’t seen before. I explored a few different wide-angle compositions before noticing that the light was finally starting to break through on the surrounding mountain peaks. My eye was drawn to some of the light hitting the side of Bow Peak, but nothing was happening yet that caused me to pull the camera out of the bag. As the light disappeared behind the clouds, I decided to retire my backpack in the vehicle and enjoy a tea while I waited for Hunter to finish his shoot. Something in the back of my mind told me to have my long lens handy, so I pulled that out of the bag, made my tea and enjoyed the surroundings. Suddenly, a cloud inversion rolled through the pass in the distance, creating this dramatic framing of Bow Peak. I ran out to the lakeshore again and grabbed a few shots of the light mixing with the peak and atmosphere before this scene disappeared once again.
