A photograph of a supercell thunderstorm on the Canadian prairie with lightning in the hail core

Beast – 2024

Storm chasing in Saskatchewan’s Big Muddy area is always a thrill, and my recent experience was no different. I started the day in Estevan, knowing that conditions were ripe for severe weather but with other commitments, really hoping I could get away in time with my wife to chase a great setup along the Saskatchewan/Montana border. Around 4 PM, we headed out toward Big Beaver, aiming to catch the forecasted.

Initially, things seemed promising as several supercells developed. We managed to get to the first good storm of the day as it separated from the others. However, they quickly lost strength and dissipated, leading to frustration. Just as it seemed like the day might be a bust, the low-level jet kicked in around sunset, this boost in wind and moisture sparked the development of a new supercell barely across the international border.

The timing was perfect. As the sun set, the low-level jet helped form a supercell with remarkable structure. The rotating updraft, or mesocyclone, was clearly visible and impressive, particularly with the dramatic lighting provided by the setting sun. As the sun set and twilight ensued the lightning became more dramatic and I caught several great bolts out of the hail core. This storm quickly turned into the highlight of the year, showcasing some of the best storm structure I saw in 2024.

Capturing this supercell in its prime was a rewarding end to the day. Despite earlier setbacks, the patience paid off with a striking display of nature’s power. The Big Muddy area once again proved to be a prime location for witnessing spectacular weather phenomena.
