Abraham Lake is a staple of any landscape photography trip to the Canadian Rockies. Its world-renowned methane bubbles are often visible due to the high winds that keep the ice on the lake free of snow. Unlike most years, the bubbles weren’t a sure thing for our trip in 2024. Abraham Lake usually freezes by the end of December/early January. This year, the first few months of winter were marked by above-seasonal temperatures, and the lake was wide open as the middle of January and our trip dates approached.
It wasn’t until the second week in January that temperatures finally dipped low enough to start the freezing process, and when temperatures did dip, they went to the extreme. -30C over a few days was enough to flash freeze the lake, adding many inches of ice depth in a short time. While this was good news for photographers chasing those elusive methane bubbles, it did some strange things to the textures in the ice and bubbles that were far from ideal. With slower freezes, the bubbles seem to layer better as they are allowed to freeze in many different layers. With a fast freeze like this, bubbles seemed far and few between and those that were there weren’t nearly as layered as I’ve witnessed in the past. Regardless, I found a set I liked enough to frame up this shot as the sun set on Mt. Michener.
