Our 3-day backcountry trip through Rockwall Pass in Kootenay National Park was an unforgettable adventure. We did the North Loop of the Rockwall trail, covering 36 km with a challenging 1300m of elevation gain, but every step rewarded us with breathtaking views.
After camping in the Tumbling Creek campground on night one, we set our alarms for 5:30 AM the next day. Waking up to the chill of dawn, we quietly packed up our campsite under the moonlight, careful not to disturb the stillness around us. Equipped with headlamps, we started the steep hike up to Rockwall Pass, guided only by the faint glow of early morning light. The silence and solitude of the trail at that hour added a sense of calm anticipation as we climbed.
Reaching Rockwall Pass just before sunrise, we were greeted by a scene that made the early wake-up worth every effort. The larches with golden needles, a striking sight in autumn, began to glow under the warm first light, and Mt. Gray and Mt. Drysdale stood tall in the background. There was still quite a bit of cloud cover around; I wasn’t certain there would be enough of an opening for that first ray of sunlight to hit the mountain peaks. I had set up an image I liked well enough, but because I didn’t have the luxury of time to explore, it was only the first thing I saw. As we waited in a cold wind, the sun rose but was initially blocked by the clouds. I spent that time wandering around Rockwall Pass, seeing if there was possibly a better composition. I found this one, and as soon as I did, the sun broke through; a band of deep red light flooding the mountain. I ran back to grab my camera, but by the time I returned to this spot, the sun had ducked behind more clouds. After a little more time passed, the clouds eased slightly and the sun broke through, bathing the mountains and larch forest in golden light. The sight was surreal, a perfect blend of vibrant colour and rugged wilderness that we knew would stay with us long after this shoot.
The rest of the hike was a rewarding mix of panoramic views and peaceful forest trails through the golden larch. Spending these three days in nature together, facing the challenges of the trail and sharing quiet moments, deepened our connection with each other and with the stunning, untamed beauty of Kootenay National Park. It was a trip we’ll always cherish.
