The storm season in Saskatchewan got off to a sluggish start this year, which left me itching for a chase. After witnessing a spectacular season in the U.S., the wait for action in Saskatchewan felt endless. However, June 23 finally brought the perfect storm conditions, with moisture and shear aligning to spark a significant thunderstorm outbreak across the province.
On that day, Herry Himanshu and I set out with high hopes. There were two possible targets: the southwest or north of Saskatoon. We sat just west of Moose Jaw waiting for initiation and ultimately decided that to chase in the favourable road network and terrain that exists in the southwest. While there were some pretty storms in the north of the province, the southwest was the right play for storm structure junkies like us. We intercepted three separate supercells, each displaying unique and impressive features. Among them, the storm captured in this photograph stood out as one of the best of the day.
The supercell featured remarkable structure, lots of lightning, produced a funnel, and eventually produced baseball-sized hail. The chase was a refreshing reminder of why I love storm chasing. After a slow start to the season, June 23 provided a spectacular display of nature’s power. It’s always exhilarating to see the elements come together and create such stunning meteorological phenomena. This image captures not just the beauty of the storm but also the thrill of chasing storms in Saskatchewan.
