Storm chasing solo in Montana is always an adventure, the road network in north Montana can be questionable and difficult to navigate while chasing solo. The middle of July is the prime of the storm season in the northern plains. July 12th was an example of this. Great moisture and shear were forecasted near the international border. Initially, I was hesitant about crossing into the U.S. alone, but as the storm that day began to impress and veered right, heading into Montana, I decided it was worth the risk.
With fuel running low and the nearest gas station in Scobey, Montana, I made the call to cross the border with only minutes to spare before the border crossing station closed. After refuelling, I repositioned myself just in time to witness the storm produce twin tornadoes, one big cone and a smaller landspout tornado. Although I wasn’t in the ideal spot for capturing a perfect tornado and structure shot, I managed to get a telephoto sequence of images of the impressive twisters which is included in my Land of Living Skies 5 film.
Moments after the tornadoes lifted, the storm structure developed into the structure you see here. The image I captured features one of the best displays of Mammatus clouds I’ve ever seen. Mammatus clouds are characterized by their puffy, bag-like protrusions hanging from the underside of a cloud base. They are gentle downdrafts, the sinking cool air descending from the anvil that form, evolve, and dissipate over about ten minutes to half an hour.
This chase was a reminder of why I love storm chasing. Even when things don’t go exactly as planned (I never really got into a great position with the limited road network), the beauty and raw power of supercells on the Northern Plains can create incredible moments.
