The final shoot of the 2025 photography trip to the Canadian Rockies had arrived. After this morning’s sunrise, I would be saying goodbye to the Canadian Rockies—but not before capturing one last incredible image. I returned to Spray Lakes, hoping to photograph the ice formations I had scouted the day before. With clear skies to the east and scattered clouds above the lake, the conditions promised dramatic, directional light. I hiked to my geo-tagged spot and waited. Suddenly, the mountains opposite my camera lit up in golden light—had I miscalculated? I tried to snap a few frames on the other side of lake but trusted my instincts and stayed put, patiently waiting for the light to hit the peaks you see here. The wait was agonizing, but then—it happened. The sun finally broke through, casting its glow on the peaks I had been watching. Just as the light reached its peak, a delicate layer of low cloud drifted in, perfectly framing the scene. It was the perfect finale to an unforgettable winter photography trip in the Canadian Rockies.
